Most common questions used to investigate
Is your criteria for a job something that you make a living from?
Are you willing to change your style and subject matter so that people will buy more?
Common conclusions
If your criteria for a job is something that you make a living from, then for the vast majority of artists, being an artist is not a job. It is certainly true that most artists do not make a living from their art. When you are 90 years old and looking back on your life, would you rather be able to say that you lived an interesting, creative life or that you lived in a huge house? Art will not make you the same money as being a stockbroker might, but you have to decide what is more important to you money or having a job/career you thoroughly enjoy.
You need to create paintings people want to buy and you need to know that being a competent painter is not a magic wand. You also need to be able to market yourself and your work.
