An early ripening hybrid that produces fruits of up to 1 lb (450 g) in weight, it is ideal outdoors in areas that experience colder conditions. The oval fruits have dark green grooves, and the pale orange flesh has a refreshing, delicate flavor.

An ideal cantaloupe for small spaces or containers, this very early variety produces good yields of 4 in (10 cm) long fruits on compact vines. The melons have a dark green, grooved skin and sweet, orange, fragrant flesh.

A popular commercial variety that can be grown outdoors, this vigorous plant bears good, successive yields of fruits, which mature early in the season. The greeny-yellow skin has a “netted” appearance, and the pale green flesh is succulent and sweet.

Hybrid ‘Halona’ was bred for flavor and resistance to powdery mildews and fusarium wilts. When picked ripe, at 79 days, the ribbed, netted fruits weigh 4–5 lb (1.8–2.3 kg), boast small seed cavities, and have sweet, orange flesh.

These softball-sized, netted heirloom muskmelons have a firm texture and luscious, complex flavor. Also known as ‘Rocky Ford Green Flesh’, the 1–2-lb (0.5–1-kg) fruits ripen early, in 70–80 days. Vines are rust-resistant.

These flavorful, 5–6-lb (2.7-kg) cantaloupes are best left to ripen until they detach easily from the vine. Resistant to powdery mildew and fusarium wilt, hybrid ‘Athena’ begins producing at 75 days and continues for a long season. Fruits store exceptionally well.

This very popular variety bears fruits of up to 4.4 lb (2 kg) in weight and has a superb, unrivaled flavor. As the melons mature, the skin turns from green to golden yellow, beneath which is a pale green, rich, aromatic, and sweet flesh.

This favorite variety bears large, 5–6-lb (2.3–2.7-kg) ribbed cantaloupes on vining plants up to 5 ft (1.5 m) wide. The sweet, juicy fruits have salmon-colored flesh, thin rinds, and small seed cavities. They mature in about 86 days.

Named for the sweet flavor and delectable aroma of their salmon-colored flesh, ‘Ambrosia’ hybrid cantaloupes measure about 6 in (15 cm) in diameter. Vines are resistant to mildews; fruits ripen 86 days after planting.

This old variety is commonly grown commercially, but can also be grown under cover by less experienced gardeners. The medium-sized, round fruits have a smooth, pale green-gray skin and a very juicy, sweet flesh that is deep orange.

This mildew-resistant galia-type hybrid produces 2–3 lb (1–1.5 kg) yellow-netted melons with sweet, aromatic green flesh that tastes similar to honeydew. Ready to harvest after just 75 days, ‘Arava’ is ideal for short-season gardeners.

With mottled green skin and juicy white flesh, this melon makes an unusual garden plant. It is a modest yielder but has good vigor. The oval fruits are succulent and aromatic and ripen in 65–75 days.

This old favorite remains popular, thanks to its sweet, musk flavor. The fruits can grow up to 2 lb (1 kg) in weight and have a green, netted skin with flesh that is quite red. Grow under cover for the best yields.

Top-notch eating quality makes disease-resistant ‘Sangria’ a popular choice. This hybrid’s deep red flesh is exceptionally high in sugars, with the voluptuous fruits often weighing 20 lb (9 kg). Melons ripen 86 days after planting.

‘Sugar Baby’ is a modern, early variety that bears small watermelons with a smooth, dark-green skin that turns almost black when ripe. The fine-textured red flesh is delicious and very sweet. It has short vines, so is ideal for small gardens.
