Can you provide enough socialization for a German Pinscher to learn to behave around other people?
Do you own any other small animal as a pet?
Do you mind having a dog that cannot be trained easily?
Can you stand the excessive barking?
Are you in a hurry to get a German Pinscher?
German Pinschers are one of the most active breeds of dogs. They need regular physical and mental stimulation to expend their energy. If they do not get rid of excess energy, they become bored, which usually leads to excessive barking and chewing of things around the house. Owners should keep their German Pinschers happy and healthy by getting involved in agility (obstacle course for dogs), or advanced obedience classes.
Most German Pinschers have a very pronounced defensive instinct towards people they do not know, so for that reason they need constant socialization with people to learn to behave in the presence of people other than their owners. If you have small children, keep in mind that German Pinschers do not tolerate hassle and can react unpredictably. Also, many dogs are very possessive of their food and it is best not to touch them while eating.
German Pinschers were developed and bred to hunt and kill small animals. Many German Pinschers are territorial and will show aggression towards other dogs of the same sex. Many have a strong instinct to chase and prey on cats and other fleeing creatures.
Although they are very intelligent, German Pinschers are stubborn and very difficult to train. The owners of these dogs must do their best to let them know who is in charge. Absolute consistency and persistence are necessary for German Pinschers to be trained properly.
German Pinschers make keen watchdogs. This means they're very quick to bark at every new sight and sound which can easily become a nuisance for unprepared owners and their neighbors.
German Pinschers are hard to find in the United States. New owners should expect a long waiting list and a high price if they want to get this breed.
If you want a dog that is conveniently sized, athletic, agile, and quick-moving, with a coat that is easy to care for and that makes a keen watchdog a German Pinscher may be right for you.
