Can you provide a lot of exercise and mental stimulation for an Airedale terrier?
Do you have small children or elderly family members?
Can you provide a lot of socialization that Airedale terrier requires?
Do you have any small pets?
Do you mind having a dog that cannot be trained easily?
Can you deal with a lot of shedding?
Airedale terriers need to have regular exercise and mental stimulation. They are quick to become bored - which they usually express with barking and destructive chewing. Airedale Terriers were never intended to be household pets. Their behaviors like following scents, searching for prey animals, chasing things that run, digging, and exploring can be troublesome in a normal household setting. Trying to suppress these behaviors, without providing alternate outlets for their high energy level, can be difficult.
Young Airedale terriers are known to jump with great force. If you have small children, or if you or someone who lives with you is older or infirm, getting an Airedale puppy is not recommended. The temptation to play rough is too strong in many young Airedales.
Most Airedale terriers are very timid, but some may have a protective instinct towards strangers. Thus, Airedales need extensive exposure to people to learn to recognize the normal behavior of people.
Airedale terriers were made so that they could hunt other animals. Many dogs have strong prey instincts so they will chase and seize fleeing cats and other creatures. Owners need to control Airedales around other animals until they find out if they have an individual with a strong prey instinct.
Although they are very intelligent, Airedale terriers are stubborn with an independent mind of their own which makes them very difficult to train. The owners of these dogs must do their best to let them know who is in charge. Absolute consistency and persistence are necessary for Airedale terriers to be trained properly.
If you want a medium to a large, sturdy and athletic dog who's energetic, yet when well-trained and well-exercised, can also be and can learn and do almost anything an Airedale terrier may be the right choice for you.
Airedale Terriers require clipping and trimming every few months. Owners must either learn how to use an electric hair clipper or pay a professional hairdresser for it.
