Can you provide a lot of exercise and mental stimulation for an Argentine Dogo?
Do you have small children or elderly family members?
Do you have any small pets?
Can you provide a lot of socialization that Argentine Dogo requires?
Do you mind having a dog that cannot be trained easily?
Can you deal with a lot of slobbering?
Argentine Dogos were created to hunt large game, and therefore owners need to give them a lot of training and mental stimulation to keep them satisfied. If they don't get enough exercise and mental stimulation they are quick to become bored - which they usually express with barking and destructive chewing. Argentine Dogos were never intended to be household pets. They need regular running, hiking, swimming, and biking, or to get involved in weight-pulling, tracking, obstacle courses, or any similar canine activity.
If you have children or elderly or infirm family members, getting an Argentine Dogo is not recommended. Young Dogos are known to jump with great force which could injure small or elderly people. Adult Argentine Dogos also can be overprotective of their puppies which could lead to problems if small children decide to play with them.
Argentine Dogos were made so that they could hunt other animals. Many dogs have strong prey instincts so they will chase and seize fleeing cats and other creatures. If anything goes wrong in the breeding, socializing, training, handling, or management of this breed, it is capable of seriously injuring or killing other animals.
Many Argentine Dogos have a protective instinct towards strangers. They need extensive exposure to people to learn to recognize the normal behavior of people. Without careful socialization, they may become suspicious of everyone (which could lead to biting) or fearful of strangers.
The best Argentine Dogos are versatile working dogs, capable of learning a great deal, but they are stubborn with an independent mind of their own which makes them very difficult to train. The owners of these dogs must do their best to let them know who is in charge. Absolute consistency and persistence are necessary for Argentine Dogos to be trained properly.
If you want a large, muscular, mastiff-type dog that has a short, easy-care coat and that thrives on vigorous exercise and athletic activities An Argentine Doge may be the right choice for you.
Individuals with heavy loose lips tend to slobber or drool, especially after eating and drinking.
