Do you mind having a pet that is predisposed to many health issues?
Beagles need a lot of exercise, more than the typical walk around the block that many owners give them. Beagles that are not exercised enough become bored, destructive, noisy, and/or obese, which puts a strain on their joints and causes health problems. To stay healthy and fit, Beagles need regular opportunities to stretch their legs and run.
Beagles love to explore, and this means that they will try and escape their enclosure with every chance they get. Beagle owners should think about getting a high fence with a wire sink into the ground to thwart digging. Gates should have the highest quality locks, as some Beagles can open flimsy latches.
Beagles are very difficult to train to defecate in a designated place. If owners hope to housebreak this breed, consistent crate training is mandatory. Expect several months of consistent crate training before this dog gets the concept.
Beagles can get very noisy. They have a loud voice that carries a long way and their howling can last for hours. If you or your neighbors can't stand the noise it is not recommended that you get this dog.
Beagles are headstrong dogs who don't particularly care about pleasing their owners. Owners must show them, through absolute consistency, that they mean what they say. Food is a great motivator with Beagles, but this kind of incentive can lead to obesity.
Even though they have short hair, Beagles shed more than an average dog. Their short coarse hairs come off when petted and stick to clothing, upholstery, and carpeting. In addition, like all scenthounds, Beagles have a distinct doggy odor.
Many Beagles are prone to several health problems, including itchy skin conditions, ear infections, many different eye diseases, joint problems, hypothyroidism, diabetes, epilepsy, and heart disease.
If you want a conveniently sized, sturdy, and athletic dog, that loves exercise, play, and outdoor activities and is good-natured and peaceful with everyone a Beagle may be the right choice for you.
