Can you provide enough exercise and mental stimulation that Bearded Collie needs?
Do you mind having a pet that is difficult to train?
Can you commit to cleaning after a very messy dog?
Can you deal with shedding?
Do you mind being on a waiting list to get this dog?
Bearded Collies are very active dogs. They need regular physical and mental stimulation to expend their energy. If they do not get rid of excess energy, they become bored, which usually leads to excessive barking and chewing of things around the house.
Bearded Collies are capable of learning a great deal. However, they have an independent mind of their own and can be difficult to raise and train. They are often manipulative, and some are stubborn, headstrong, and dominant and will make owners prove that they can make them do things.
Without frequent brushing, Bearded Collie's coat quickly becomes matted. Like all shaggy dogs, this is a messy dog. Leaves, mud, snow, fecal matter, and other debris cling to his coat and end up all over the house. When he drinks and eats, his beard absorbs water and food, which can drip and fall on floors when he walks. Shaggy dogs are not suited to fastidious housekeepers.
Bearded Collies are average shedders, not heavy shedders. However, their shed hair often gets caught in their long wavy coat and when they roll on the floor they can leave hair everywhere.
Bearded Collie breeders are rare, so you will probably need to go on a waiting list to get one. The prices of Bearded Collies are high also.
If you want a medium-sized, shaggy, and sturdy dog that is athletic and good-natured with everyone including other animals a Bearded Collie may be the right choice for you.
