Can you provide enough exercise and mental stimulation for a Belgian Malinois?
Can you provide enough socialization for a Belgian Malinois?
Do you have any other animal as a pet?
Can you deal with a lot of shedding?
Do you mind having a pet that is difficult to train?
Belgian Malinois' are very active dogs. They need regular physical and mental stimulation to expend their energy. If they do not get rid of excess energy, they become bored, which can lead them to destructive behavior, in or outside the house. These dogs were never intended to be simply household pets. Their working behaviors are inappropriate in a normal household setting. Trying to suppress these "hardwired" behaviors, without providing alternate outlets for their high energy level, can be difficult.
Belgian Malinois' have protective instincts toward strangers. They need extensive exposure to people to learn to recognize the normal behavior of people. Without careful socialization, they may become suspicious or fearful of everyone which can lead to aggression.
Many Belgian Malinois' are dominant or aggressive toward other dogs of the same sex. Some have strong instincts to chase and seize cats and other fleeing creatures. It's not recommended to raise this dog if you have any other animal that can get hurt by Belgian Malinois.
Belgian Malinois' are heavy shedders. Owners should expect to find hair all over their clothing and furnishings. If you can't deal with regular cleaning, this breed is not recommended.
Belgian Malinois' are versatile working dogs, capable of learning a great deal. Many individuals excel at the highest levels of competition. However, while some are quick to learn and eager to please, others can be manipulative, willful, and dominant and will make you prove that you can make them do things.
If you want a large and strong dog who is exceedingly smart and versatile, observant and watchful, with strong protective instincts a Belgian Malinois may be the right choice for you.
