Can you provide a proper balance of exercise that giant breed needs?

Can you provide enough socialization for a Belgian Malinois?

Do you have any other animal as a pet?

Do you mind having a dog that cannot be trained easily?

Can you deal with potential drooling and flatulence (gassiness)?

Do you mind having a pet that has a shorter lifespan than most dogs and is predisposed to many health issues?

Common conclusions

Young Cane Corsos need enough exercise to keep them lean and healthy, but they have soft growing bones, joints, and ligaments that can become over-stressed and damaged if the exercise is extensive. Adult Cane Corsos need more exercise to keep them in shape, but not in hot or humid weather because they can overheat easily. The proper amount of exercise can be difficult to regulate in giant breeds.

Cane Corsos have protective instincts toward strangers. They need extensive exposure to people to learn to recognize the normal behavior of people. Without careful socialization, they may become suspicious or fearful of everyone which can lead to aggression.

Many Cane Corsos are dominant or aggressive toward other dogs of the same sex. Some have strong instincts to chase and seize cats and other fleeing creatures. It's not recommended to raise this dog if you have any other animal that can get hurt by Cane Corso.

Though much more trainable than other mastiff breeds, Cane Corsos have an independent mind of their own and can be very difficult to raise and train. Some individuals are stubborn and dominant and will make owners prove that they can make them do things. Owners must show that they mean what they say through absolute consistency.

Cane Corsos with heavy jowls drool and slobber which can be bothersome to some owners. Potential gassiness (flatulence) is another problem with Cane Corsos. Fortunately, this problem can be alleviated with a homemade diet of real meat and vegetables.

The lifespan of the mastiff breeds is short. An alarming number are crippled by bone and joint diseases and/or succumb to heart diseases, bloat, or cancer in middle age.

If you want a massive and powerful dog that has a short easy-care coat and makes an imposing watchdog a Cane Corso may be the right choice for you.
