Do you see everyday situations as far worse than they really are, and then blame yourself for your extreme pessimism and negativity?
Are you easily stressed?
Are you volatile, with heavy mood swings?
Do you worry often?
Do you have anxiety or depression?
Are you very sensitive?
Based on your answers, it is unlikely that you show neurotic behavior. Some people show neurotic behaviors because they actually have a neurotic personality. This personality type is also called ‘neuroticism’. It’s not a medical condition. Experts call it one of the “Big Five” personality traits (besides neuroticism, there is extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience). These are sets of common characteristics that are found around the world most often. Someone with a neurotic personality has difficulties dealing with stress. They see everyday situations as way worse than they are, and then blame themselves for their extreme negativity.
Based on your answers, you may be displaying one or two symptoms related to neurotic behavior. Neurotic behaviors may or may not be the cause of mental health problems. If someone has a neurotic personality, they are more likely to get internalizing disorders such as depression, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder and several other mental health conditions. However, a healthy dose of neurotic tendencies can actually be very useful. For example, if you worry about your health, it will motivate you to eat well and exercise enough.
Unfortunately, you are displaying symptoms typically seen among individuals who have neurotic behavior. Someone with a neurotic personality has difficulties dealing with stress. What you can do is to try to manage your stress and anxiety. Self-treatment may work if your symptoms are mild and brief. Make sure to exercise daily and have a friend or family member that you can talk to. Besides, make sure to get enough sleep (aim for 8 hours per night), cut back on alcohol and caffeine and maintain a balanced diet. Try to replace negative thoughts with positives ones. If this doesn’t help, you may want to ask help from a mental health professional.
