Additional tests, such as imaging tests or joint aspiration (arthrocentesis), can help determine the underlying cause of the swelling.

Water on the knee is a painful and debilitating condition that occurs when excess fluid accumulates within the knee joint. It usually affects only one knee, and sometimes you can even feel fluid when you lightly press on a swollen joint. In mild cases, a swollen knee can be treated at home using R.I.C.E. formula (rest, ice, compression and elevation). In other cases, treatment depends on the severity and underlying cause of the water on the knee. It includes painkillers and procedures to remove fluid from the knee joint.
