Do you know any veterinarian with experience in avian medicine?
First thing owners should do is providing appropriate housing for their budgie. Cage for budgerigars should be as large as possible with the bird able to fully extend the wings and flap without touching the sides of the enclosure. The cage should be clean, secure, safe, and constructed of durable, non-toxic materials. The spacing of cage bars should be ½ inches or less. Horizontal bars provide the best opportunity for climbing.
Budgie owners should place the cage at or below eye level, away from excessive sunlight, and away from anything aromatic. Birds have a very efficient respiratory system. They absorb anything in the air well and easily suffer toxic side effects from things like aerosols, cigarette smoke, essential oils, etc. Budgies also stress easily so you'll need to keep their cage away from other animals, like cats, that could stress your pet bird.
Budgies are active and inquisitive birds, so they need a variety of toys to hold their attention and fend off boredom. Your budgie’s home should include lots of perches, swings, and interactive elements to stimulate their senses. Budgies also love mirrored surfaces and shreddable toys.
Budgies need to be kept fit and healthy by giving them a spacious aviary that they can fly around in. You can let them fly free from their cage in your room, but make sure you only let them fly in a safe room and supervise them at all times. Birds outside of cages need constant supervision to avoid access to other pets, small children, hot stoves, sinks/tubs full of water, and household toxins.
Pellets make a good base diet for budgies, so make sure that you refresh the pellet bowl daily. Leafy greens provide essential vitamins and minerals and can be given to them every other day. Your budgie should have fruits only once a week and treats are best given only once monthly. Also, providing your budgie with a piece of cuttlefish is great for their beak and will also boost their calcium levels. Avoid feeding them chocolate, lettuce, avocado, rhubarb, alcohol, fruit seeds, or caffeine as they can make your pet very sick.
You can take care of a pet budgie.
Budgies need to have a complete physical examination every 6-12 months as they are prone to contracting parasites, like worms or lice, and can have respiratory issues and digestive problems.
