Common conclusions

To get your hair braided, you need a certain length of hair for it to look good. Otherwise you could get hair extensions and get them braided.

You first have to wash and condition your hair and let them dry out then deep condition them and after washing, de-tangle them or straighten them out so the person doing your braiding can hold your hair easily.

Check the profile of the person using social media, their own website or even going down to their store and check how they go through the process as every person will have different styles and skill level.

If you've found extensions that are the business, then tell your hairdresser you will be bringing your own hair upfront. If you have no idea if you want human hair or synthetic, do a little research on what your chosen hair salon carries and if it suits your hair.

Relaxing the hair before you get braids is a big no-no because the relaxer stretches the elasticity of the hair, stressing the pH balance; the weight of the braids will pull and cause breakage at the root. Wait at least 8 weeks before getting your hair braided.

If your braids are too tight you'll likely experience some moderate to serious breakage. Communicate with your hairdresser; if that first braid tugs something terrible, say something. Your braids should not pull your scalp or be painful.

One of the biggest misconceptions about wearing your hair in braids is that you don't need to do any regular maintenance. You must keep your scalp clean and moisturized. Use a stocking cap to shampoo the hair without disturbing the braids and use shea butter to keep the hair growing and the scalp moisturized.

Having braids and taking care of them is a lond and hard process so make sure you are up for it. Check stories of other people regarding braiding.
