Hepatitis D infection occurs only in people who already have hepatitis B. People can get both infections at the same time (confection), or people with chronic hepatitis B subsequently become infected with hepatitis D (superinfection). About 90 percent of people with superinfection are unable to fight off the virus, so they will also develop chronic hepatitis D. Your doctor will do blood tests for different types of hepatitis and assess your liver function and potential liver damage.
