The blood vessels in your nose dilate, filling the nasal mucosa with blood and fluid which results in swelling of the nasal tissue. The symptoms are usually triggered by environmental irritants (smoke, spicy food, stress, and odors), certain medication or hormonal changes. Diagnosing nonallergic rhinitis is based on your symptoms, physical examination and ruling out allergic rhinitis. To do this, your doctor may order skin and blood tests.

It is a common condition and about 19 million of Americans have nonallergic rhinitis. In some cases nonallergic rhinitis may cause complications such as nasal polyps, sinusitis and middle ear infections.
