Most common questions used to investigate

Check the accelerator pedal. Is it stuck while being pushed down?

Check the accelerator cable. Is it pulled and gotten stuck?

Check the floor mat of the drivers side. Is it pushing upon the accelerator paddle?

Did you just start the car after a period of time and the engine's cold?

Is the air conditioner of the car turned ON?

Does your car have a carburetor and is giving out black/grey smoke?

Check the air filter. Is it dirty and clogged with dirt?

Common conclusions

The stuck pedal could be the cause as it will be constantly pulling the accelerator cable leading to a high rpm and a lot of noise.

The cable is an extension of the pedal so if the cable is stuck due to something, the rpm will remain high. Fix it yourself or get it checked at the auto shop.

Many such cases are due to the floor mat pressing upon the pedal and having a high rpm. Simply pull the mat back and the rpm will go down.

Many cars have a system preinstalled in them that when the engine is cold, the rpm is raised to warm the engine quickly. After a short period of time, rpm will return to normal.

When the AC is turned ON, the rpm is raised automatically so the car can drive normally and ignore the strain of the AC on the engine.

Old cars had carburetors, which when faulty could cause a rough idle and create loud noise due to high rpm. Get it checked and fixed to solve the issue.

The dirty filter might be the cause as a blocked filter will not let air pass through properly which will make the car's engine have a rough idle.

The cause for the high rpm could also be a clutch slipping or some thing wrong with the electronics. So it is better to get your car checked before any irreversible damage is caused.
