Common conclusions

If you want your deutzia to flower to its full potential you should provide it with full sun. Deutzia can tolerate partial shade to some extent but will do best in a place where it can get at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.

Deutzia can grow on many different types of soil, but it must be well-drained because these flowers do not tolerate waterlogged soil and "wet feet".

Water your shrub well after planting. Unless you have more than 1 inch of rainfall per week, give new plants a good soaking once a week during summer. Established plants can get by on less water, but most grow best if the soil remains evenly moist. Before watering, check the soil 1 inch down to see if it is dry.

You shouldn't fertilize deutzia at planting time or in the first growing year because these shrubs need time to settle in before being pushed to grow. Established plants should be fertilized just once a year, during early spring with a 10-10-10 slow-release, granular fertilizer.

Deutzia blooms on the previous year's growth. If you prune your plant before it has bloomed in the spring, you may remove flower buds. In late winter or early spring, cut away dead stems or stems that were broken during winter. Wait until after flowering is finished to cut back stems to the strongest buds.

Good job! You are taking good care of your deutzia.

Deutzias are relatively problem-free shrubs. Occasionally they can be attacked by aphids or leaf miners but they usually don't do much harm. The main disease to look out for are fungal leaf spots. Maintain good growing practices and you will minimize the chances of diseases.
