Do you live in a region with a cold or a temperate climate?
Are your rhododendrons planted in a place that receives at least 6 hours of bright sunlight during a day?
Are your rhododendrons planted in a site that receives afternoon shade?
Are your rhododendrons planted in a well-drained, humus-rich, moist, and acidic soil?
Are your rhododendrons protected from dry winds?
Do you keep a layer of mulch above the soil where rhododendrons grow?
Are you fertilizing rhododendrons excessively?
Are you making sure that the soil is constantly moist but not flooded?
Have you been pruning your rhododendron?
Are you keeping pests away from your rhododendrons?
In cold or temperate regions, rhododendrons need full sun to increase flowers and avoid mildew problems. Shrubs need a minimum of 6 hours of full sun daily.
In warm or hot regions, rhododendrons need to be placed in a site that receives afternoon shade, especially in hot areas. In tropical zones, plants will bloom in full shade.
Rhododendrons are very particular about the soil they are planted in. They need well-drained soil, rich in organic matter. Soil needs to be moist all the time, but not soggy or flooded. Correct soil pH for the growing rhododendron bush is crucial. Between 4.5 and 5.5 on the pH scale is appropriate. Agriculture sulfur is a good choice for amending the soil if its pH is too high.
Dry and cold winds can dry out rhododendron buds and leaves. You should shelter your plants from dry and cold winds.
Rhododendrons have shallow root systems and need moist soil and mulch to keep them from drying out. Mulch plants every spring with 2 to 5 inches of pine bark chips or pine needles to protect shallow roots and retain soil moisture. Do not pile mulch heavily around the trunk of the shrub, this can keep the trunk too wet and encourage rot.
Rhododendrons shouldn't be fertilized excessively. Fertilize them sparingly and only when flower buds swell in the early spring, even if they are fall bloomers. Heavy applications of fertilizer will burn the plants.
Consistently moist soil is needed for proper rhododendron care, but too much water creates problems for the growing rhododendron. When leaves curl and twist, this indicates that water is needed immediately. The rhododendron bush should not be allowed to go through the stress of wilting.
Spring-flowering shrubs like rhododendrons shouldn't be pruned freely. To reduce height, prune after flowering in the spring. Otherwise, just remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches at any time of year. Spent flowers on stalks should be deadheaded by bending them over until they break away from their stems.
Good job! You are taking good care of your rhododendrons?
Rhododendron is a very susceptible plant to various pests. Pay special attention to Vine weevils, whiteflies, leafhoppers, lace bugs, scale insects, caterpillars, aphids. Diseases like powdery mildew, bud blast, rust, leafy gall, petal blight are also a thing to look out for.
