Do you experience, over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent and intense sexual arousal from observing an unsuspecting person who is naked, in the process of disrobing or engaging in sexual activity, as manifested by fantasies, urges or behaviors?
Have you acted on these sexual urges with a non-consenting person or do the sexual urges or fantasies cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning?
Are you at least 18 years old?
Based on your answers, it is unlikely that you have voyeuristic disorder.
While it is unlikely that you have voyeuristic disorder, you are displaying some signs related to it. Voyeurism can be described as an interest in watching people (who don’t know they are being observed) while they undress or engage in sexual acts. You may have voyeuristic interests if you feel aroused by thinking about watching someone undress or have sex. While this is a common sexual interest, violating someone’s right to consent and being unable to control your urges are problematic signs. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms affect your daily life or if you want to know more about the disorder.
Unfortunately, you are displaying the symptoms typically seen among individuals who have voyeuristic disorder. Seeking medical attention is highly recommended in your case. The disorder can be diagnosed in people with an age of at least 18 years. Voyeuristic disorder is treatable, however, people who have the disorder are often too embarrassed to admit their problems. Usually it’s a family member or friend of the person that recommends treatment. With therapy, the person will develop impulse control and find alternatives ways for arousal. Additionally, support groups can be very beneficial. The person will be able to connect with others who are dealing with the same problems and coping tools can be shared.
