Edible plants generally require a little more care than other plants, but there are even some vegetables that will not require high maintenance. Lettuce is the easiest vegetable you can grow, good choices are also tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, radishes, green beans, and pumpkins.
Some annuals that are easy to care for are Calendula officinalis (pot marigold), Centaurea cyanus (bachelor's buttons), Cleome hassleriana (spider flower), Cosmos bipinnatus, Coreopsis basalis (calliopsis), Eschscholzia californica (California poppy), Gaillardia pulchella (blanket flower), Impatiens spp., Lobularia maritima (sweet alyssum), Nigella damescena (love-in-a-mist), Petunia hybrida, Phlox drummondii (annual phlox), Portulaca grandiflora (rose moss), Scabiosa atropurpurea (pincushion flower), Tagetes cvs. (marigold), Tropaeolium majus (nasturtium), Viola x wittrockiana (pansy).
Some perennials that are easy to care for are Achillea spp. (yarrow), armeria spp. (thrift), Cenaurea macrocephala (basket flower), Centranthus ruber (red valerian), Coreopsis spp. verticillata (coreopsis), Dicentra spectabilis (bleeding heart), Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower), Gaillardia grandiflora (blanket flower), Gaura lindheimeri (white gaura), Homerocallis cvs. (daylily), Perovskia atriplicifolia (Russian sage), Phlox subulata (creeping phlox), Physostegia virginiana (false dragonhead), Primula spp. (primrose), Rudbeckia hirta (black-eyed Susan), Salvia farinacea, (mealycup sage), Tanacetum coccineum (painted daisy).
Some ground cover plants that are easy to care for are Ajuga reptans (bugleweed, carpet bugle), Convallaria majalis (lily of the valley), Geranium spp. (cranesbill), Lasimachia nummularia (creeping Jenny), Pachysandra procumbens, Thymus serpyllum (creeping thyme), Vinca minor (myrtle).
Some easy to care shrubs that you can plant are Cornus alba (Tatarian dogwood), Forsythia spp., Fothergilla gardenii (dwarf fothergilla), Ilex glabra 'Nordic' (inkberry), Itea virginica (Virginia sweetspire), Mahonia aquifolium 'Compactum' (Oregon grape), Philadelphus spp. (mock orange).

Hi! I’m Sreten Filipović. I graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Belgrade, with a master's degree in Environmental Protection in Agricultural Systems. I’ve worked as a researcher at Finland's Natural Resources Institute (LUKE) on a project aimed at adapting south-western Finland to drought episodes. I founded a consulting agency in the field of environment and agriculture to help farmers who want to implement the principles of sustainability on their farms. I’m also a founding member of the nonprofit organization Ecogenesis from Belgrade whose main goal is non-formal education on the environment and ecology. In my spare time, I like to write blog posts about sustainability, the environment, animal farming, horticulture, and plant protection. I’ve also published several science-fiction short stories.
