Common conclusions
You may have a condition called carpal tunnel syndrome or median nerve syndrome. The median nerve is a nerve that controls the movement of your hand starting from shoulder to thumb. As a result of overuse of your thumb and/or fingers, such as holding something heavy, typing or any other activity that truly involves your thumb or fingers for a longer period of time, can cause muscles to get inflamed. Try to rest your hand, apply an ice-pack around the area and wear a wrist support. You can apply pain-reliever spray or gel or take some OTC pain and inflammation medicine such as Ibuprofen.
It is very common to develop this condition around this time when you have to care for your baby all the time. This condition is called de Quevrvain's tenosynovitis. It is an inflammation of the tendon between your wrist and the lower thumb. It may suddenly happen or develop gradually. Try to rest your wrist as much as you can because it can take weeks to fully recover. You can use wrist braces to support your movements and use ice packs or OTC topical gel/spray to treat the pain. You can also take OTC medications like Ibuprofen.
If you have been using your thumb often recently such as gaming, gardening, holding a racket or any other work-related task that involves repetitive movements of the thumb, it may lead to inflammation of the tendon between your wrist and the lower thumb. The condition is called de Quervain's tenosynovitis. The pain and inflammation can be resolved by resting your thumb and applying ice packs or using ice baths. Topical and oral pain-relieving medicines can help as well.
It is a good idea to get your uric acid level checked. You can also see your doctor for the screening of RA (Rheumatoid arthritis).
It may simply be a temporary overuse of your thumb, for example, lifting a weight at the gym with the wrong posture. You can relax your palm and apply an ice pack to the affected area.
