Common conclusions

A medical provider can properly clean a deep cut and then use stitches or staples to close it, lining up the skin edges smoothly and evenly. This should keep scarring to a minimum.

A through cleaning of the cut is vital to healing. A dirty, contaminated wound will become infected, and infection causes poor healing and scarring. Gently wash the cut with mild soap and water to kill bacteria and remove dirt.

There is less chance of scarring if the cut is kept moisturized and covered. A dried-out wound will form a scab, and the dry, poorly healing skin beneath it will leave a scar. Keep the wound soft with petroleum jelly or antibacterial cream and cover it with a bandage.

A small amount of redness, swelling, and discomfort is part of normal healing; but excessive inflammation slows healing, leads to infection, and increases scarring. See your medical provider.

The stitches should remain flat and neat. If they become raised or uneven, or are pulling apart, see your medical provider. Return on time to have the stitches removed by the provider.

Use sunscreen of SPF 30 or more on the scar to help keep it from darkening.

It is normal to have slight scarring after any wound. You will see a red, brown, or pale white line which fades over time, though it will probably not disappear completely. It is normal for a person with darker skin to have a scar that looks dark brown.

Your wound has healed very well and you are fortunate not to have any scar.
