Most common questions used to investigate

Do you show single or multiple motor and/or vocal tics?

Have the tics been present for less than 1 year since first tic onset?

Is the onset before age 18?

Can you confirm that the disturbance is not attributable to the effects of a substance (e.g., cocaine) or another medical condition (e.g., Huntington’s disease, postviral encephalitis)?

Can you confirm that you have never met the criteria for Tourette syndrome (both physical and verbal tics occur, often at the same time) or persistent (chronic) motor or vocal tic disorder?

Common conclusions

You do not have provisional tic disorder.

It is unlikely that you have provisional tic disorder. This disorder is characterized by physical and verbal tics. A tic is a sudden, uncontrollable movement or sound that is different from someone’s normal gestures.

While it is unlikely that you have acute stress disorder, you are displaying some signs related to the disorder. Tics are very difficult to diagnose, because they can be related to other problems. For example, twitching the nose can be caused by an allergy. It may be important to see your doctor if you are showing some signs of provisional tic disorder. Your doctor will start with a physical exam to rule out other underlying conditions that could be causing the symptoms. If necessary, your doctor will conduct additional tests such as CT scans or blood tests.

Unfortunately, you are displaying symptoms typically seen among individuals who have provisional tic disorder. If the tics affect work or school performance, a combination of therapy and medication may be the best solution. Techniques to manage stress are of importance, because stress can make tics worse. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a very common therapy to treat all types of tic disorders. In such therapy sessions you will learn how to control your behaviors and thoughts. Medication cannot be used to cure tic disorders, but in some cases it can reduce symptoms. Provisional tic disorder is a frustrating condition, but with proper treatment the disorder is controllable.
